The Kota Kinabalu Junior Chamber & The Philippine National Commission
for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)
Presents: MSU-IIT Octava
Choral Society live in Malaysia!
ABOUT THE SONG
Song Title: Mamayug Akun
Origin: Maranao Song
Category: Songs of the Tri-people of Mindanao
Arr.: Dr. Helen Tejero (Ph.D.
In Ethno-musicology)
BRIEF HISTORY
The Octava Choral Society was first
organized in 1978. Bagging the championship during the National Music Competitions for Young Artists in 1981, the group was given the honor of
representing the
Philippines in the 3rd International Choral Festival held in Manila in 1983. The years
after that were spent honing further
its choral skill and developing
a unique repertoire while performing in full-length concerts in different
places in Mindanao and the Visayas. Its
highly acclaimed performances at the Luce
Auditorium at Silliman University, undoubtedly the Cultural Center for Southern
Philippines, and practically
everywhere it goes, is a proof
of the heights
the choir has attained. As part of its
mission to help in the preservation
and promotion of choral music
tradition, the group has also performed in lecture-demos in various schools in the area. The Octava
Choral Society is MSU-IIT's
Resident Choir,
Without doubt, the group has
already established itself as choir
with its own distinctive style and repertoire. It is perhaps
the only choir in the country
that consciously promoted Mindanao's Indigenous songs and music. Major part of its
repertoire are Maranao, Maguindanao, B'laan, Tausog and other Mindanao tribal songs set
in choral style. To date, the Octava
has easily given more than
forty major concerts, all of which were well
received. For the years 1999 and beyond, the
Octava hopes to lend its
unique brand of music and
style in concerts, competitions,
and festivals both here and
in other countries.
