great conducting is all about.

Conducting Functions Video Ozawa Karajan
Analysis of conductors applying Gumm's theory of
six functions of conducting
(Music Educators
Journal, December 2012)
MUSIC RELATED
1. Mechanical
Precision Function: traditional right-hand
beat/meter patterns.
2. Expressive Function:
changes of dynamics, tempo, phrasing intensity, and other expressive music content typically indicated by the
left hand, also integrated into right-hand patterns, and by the
emotion of the face.
MUSICIAN RELATED
3. Motivational Function:
Signals to get, maintain, and heighten
musician attention through alerting eye contact, facial
expressions, body stance, and hand
gestures, ahead of musical events
so musicians are locked in and ready.
4. Physical Technique Function: Gestures aimed at guiding the motion
musicians put into playing instruments
or singing--muscle exertion, direction, speed, and the like.
5. Unrestrained Tone Function: Upward, circular, floating, rising, and minimized
motions to release tension in tone production and leave musicians to flow and
unify together on their own.
6. Psychosocial Function: Gestures drawn from musicians'
common experiences-- more mime, acting, or dancing than
traditional conducting--for
a more immediate connection
to human expression.
